Typing two space characters in close succession turns the first one into a period.
I think this can be turned off by overriding `insertCompletion...` like this post mentions: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/9819378/cocoa-stopping-the-field-editor-from-auto-completing-on-space-key
If you don't use that Mac OS feature, you could turn it off in: System Preferences > Keyboard > Text > "Add full stop with double-space". Of course, this is a system wide setting, so it will also be disabled in other apps.
But I agree that a code editor should have its own set of rules, not necessarily the textual / linguistic rules.
